My family history begins with Francois ETIENNE born circa 1674 in the village of Courtemaiche in the mountains of Switzerland near the French border. Courtemaiche is now in Canton Jura but was orginally in Canton Bern. Francois married Catherine BESANCON, they had a son Jean Jacques ETIENNE born 10 April 1710 in Courtemaiche (Bern) Switzerland. Jean Jacques married Jeanne Marguerite VALLAT who was born 16 November 1721 in Damphreux (Bern) Switzerland. They were married 25 January 1746 in Courtemaiche, Switzerland and had a son, Jean Philippe ETIENNE born 26 February 1747 in Courtemaiche. Jean Philippe was married twice, first to Marie PICARD born circa 1744, died September 1794 and second to Marie-Anne Franecois FRANCAIS born 9 January 1770 in Etueffont-Haut (Belfort) France. Jean Philippe and Maria-Anne were married 6 June 1795 in Courtemaiche, Switzerland. Joseph Etienne, son of Jean Philippe and Maria-Anne, came to America from France. He, his wife, Marieanne Moulin, and two children arrived in New York in 1828 on the US ship Henri IV.
